Welcome to an early version of the digital home for the ongoing development of the Queer Club Culture Archive, originally launched in April 2025 as an independent project by David Aaron Swartz, and since May 2026, the archive has been formed as an association in Berlin. Currently, the Queer Club Culture Archive e.V. (i.Gr.) as the process is in motion to formally register the association with the city and approve the organization's application for non-profit status as a source of cultural heritage, sub-cultural preservation, eduction, as an entity to support the legacy of contemporary queer club culture.
Mission and Purpose
The Queer Club Culture Archive (QCCA) is a practitioner-led research initiative dedicated to the preservation and reclamation of queer subcultural memory. In an era where digital history is often held hostage by the "digital mirage" of corporate social media, the QCCA advocates for archival dominion: the right for marginalized communities to own, manage, and define their own historical narratives. This project intends to serve as a sanctuary for the ephemeral histories of the queer underground. Our work is driven by a singular realization: that the history of our community is evaporating in real-time. The QCCA exists to ensure that these stories do not vanish alongside the platforms that currently host them.
We employ a "passionate practitioner" model of archiving which recognizes that formal metadata alone cannot capture the nuance of a subculture; it requires a specialized toolkit of subcultural literacy and radical empathy to find "us" in the shadows of the past.
This labor of love and care is intended to bridge the visibility gap within existing institutional repositories. By utilizing subcultural literacy and a research-intensive work ethic, the QCCA aspires to uncover hidden queer narratives buried within heteronormative archival structures. We believe that the resilience of the queer dancefloor is not just a subject for study, but a living legacy that requires urgent, community-facilitated safeguarding.
About the Founder
The QCCA was founded in 2023 by David Aaron Swartz, an independent researcher and curator based in Berlin. David brings over twenty years of experience as an entrepreneur and artist representative in the music industry (managing artists such as Mykki Blanco, Tricky, Patrick Wolf, Finn Ronsdorf, and Lotic). This deep insider background provides the archive with a unique methodological edge, combining industry-honed strategic tactics along with radical archival care. While David may not have a formal educational background in the technical sphere of archival sciences, he brings a passionate love for and engagement with the queer club culture community, and he has engaged in various continuing education and professional development training in recent years (e.g. Europeana digital heritage training, NODE Academy for Curatorial Studies courses, and the completion of a Post Graduate Certificate of Higher Education via the SAE Institute). Additionally, David has been committed to volunteer work at the Archiv der Jugendkulturen e.V. (Archive of Youth Cultures) since mid-2025 which has provided him with hands-on training to reconcile the technical standards of archival science with the impassioned urgency of community-led preservation.
